The museum was inaugurated in May of 2000. It resides in a house of 19th century neo-classical style - the traditional architecture in the state of Jalisco. The museum displays the popular arts of the state of Jalisco with an emphasis on heritage. Different exhibitions halls show charrería (Mexican rodeo) and leather works, ceramics and glass, plant fibers and furniture, traditional cooking and handcrafts' store.
A temporary exhibition hall displays the new and contemporary expressions of the popular arts.
